Dr. Mae Jemison made world and U.S. history in 1992, as the first woman of color to go into space when she flew aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor. After six years as an astronaut she started her own company, The Jemison Group, Inc., which focuses on the research, development and implementation of advanced technologies. Prior to space travel, she worked for two years in Sierra Leone and Liberia as Area Peace Corps Medical Officer and practiced medicine in Los Angeles. Dr. Jemison currently serves as professor of Environmental Studies at Dartmouth College where she directs the Jemison Institutes for Advancing Technology in Developing Countries.
Mary Matalin, frequent network political commentator, was listed by Talkers Magazine as one of The 100 Most Important talk show hosts in America. Along with husband James Carville, she is co-author of the best-selling political campaign book, All's Fair, Love, War, and Running for President. Matalin joined George Bush in his Presidential Campaign in 1986, serving as National Victory Director in the general campaign and upon President Bush's victory, as, Republican National Committee Chairman Atwater's Chief of Staff. In 1992, President Bush named her Deputy Campaign Manager for Political Operations.
James Carville, has managed more campaigns than any other political consultant in America. Carville's biggest win was Bill Clinton's election to the Presidency in 1992, the first time a Democrat had claimed the White House in 12 years. In 1993, Carville was honored as the Campaign Manager of the Year by the American Association of Political Consultants. He is currently serving as a Senior Political Advisor to the President. Carville recently completed his second book, We're Right, They're Wrong, A Handbook for Spirited Progressives.
Tara VanDerveer, head women's varsity basketball coach at Stanford University, led the U.S. Women's Basketball Team to a Gold Medal Victory at the 1996 Olympics. In Atlanta, the U.S. Team posted an 8-0 record, including the huge defeat of Brazil to capture the gold. For her efforts, VanDerveer was awarded "1996 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year." Prior to coming to Stanford, VanDerveer served as head coach at the University of Idaho. Now at the pinnacle of her career, she has amassed a remarkable 403-113 (.781) record in her 17 years of collegiate coaching.
Dr. Laura D'Andrea Tyson, former National Economic Adviser, was the highest ranking woman in President Clinton's Administration where she managed economic policy-making throughout the executive branch. Prior to her appointment, Dr. Tyson served as the Chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, the first woman to hold that post. Before joining the Administration, Dr. Tyson published extensively on industrial competitiveness and trade, including, Who's Bashing Whom? Trade Conflict in High Technology Industries. She currently has returned to her position as professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
Jane Brody is the New York Times' celebrated personal health columnist. Syndicated in over 100 newspapers nationwide, she is the author of eight books on health and nutrition including, Secrets of Good Health, You Can Fight Cancer and Win and Jane Brody's Good Food Gourmet. A frequent media guest, she is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards for journalistic excellence together with honorary doctorates from Princeton and Hamline University.
Muriel Siebert was the first woman to gain a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. She was also the first woman to own a national discount brokerage firm and serve as New York State's Superintendent of Banking. Reflecting her commitment to "giving back," Ms. Siebert established a charitable program for her firm in 1990 which has contributed over $5 million. Her philanthropy and professional success has earned her induction in the International Women's Hall of Fame.
