President's Letter

SHARPNACK.jpg (8597 bytes)PBWC was honored to host the premier showing of Meryl Streep's new film, 'One True Thing' in San Francisco on September 14th. I personally could not be there due to business travel, but from what I understand there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Meryl joined us in person with her co-star Renee Zellweger, to engage in a dialogue about the movie and its impact on those attending.

The PBWC Board of Directors has completed it's planning session for the 1999 conference to be held at Moscone Center on June 2, 1999. The new Board members have added a wonderful dimension of enthusiasm and creativity as we carve out the strategy to produce the most remarkable conference you can imagine. We are using the opportunity of the new millennium to continue celebrating the accomplishments of women and showcasing the latest thinking and innovations in all aspects of our personal and professional lives.

We are targeting 8,000 attendees and offer you a chance to register early to take advantage of the early-bird discount. Mary Huss and the enrollment team encourage you to reach out to someone who as never been to the PBWC conference and ask them to join you on June 2. Sharing the experience with friends and co-workers will keep what you learned alive and growing throughout the year. Tina Frank and the program committee have promised to exceed even our highest expectations with a program that is not only powerful in its content but innovative in its delivery. Rounding out the team is Cathie Bennett Warner's development team who have committed to find creative ways for sponsors to not only be involved in the conference on June 2nd but to reach out to PBWC members throughout the year offering discounts, special offers and special events.

As we approach the 1999 we want to ask important questions about our future. Rita Harmon, executive director of Leadership America, recently provoked my thinking and in turn I'd like to provoke yours by asking you to consider the following questions:

  • What is the legacy that we want to leave? 
  • What can we do collectively that we cannot do individually?
  • What can we do for California that no one else is doing?

All in all I believe that we have the finest organization and conference for professional and business women in California because YOU are a member. My mom always said that "you are known by the company you keep" and I can tell you that I'm sure proud to belong to our PBWC community.
