Natural Progesterone for Re-balanced Life
By Sandra Boros
It happens to all women. You start to notice little changes: mood swings, less energy, bone loss. That is because your progesterone levels are fluctuating, and it starts as early as your thirties. Doctors today prescribe a synthetic form of the female hormone progesterone for women with menstrual problems, osteoporosis and menopausal symptoms. In spite of the known side effects and risks associated with taking synthetic progesterone, most doctors believe that the benefits generally outweigh the risks. The risks, though, are not inconsequential. In addition to unpleasant side effects such as fluid retention and salt buildup, synthetic progesterone is know to cause some serious illnesses-blood clots and uterine and breast cancers.
Women today are discovering, however, that they don t have to take synthetic progesterone. A natural and safer form of progesterone is readily available and is effective in relieving the symptoms for which synthetic progesterone is prescribed: hot flashes, night sweats or insomnia, PMS mood swings, depression, weight gain, water retention, heavy and or irregular periods, loss of sex drive and energy. In 1936, Japanese scientists discovered that a species of wild yam growing in the south of Mexico contained a chemical called diosgenin, which is remarkably similar to progesterone. For a number of years following this discovery, Mexican yam was a primary source for the production of this and other hormones. Until recently, wild yam, not to be confused with the tuberous sweet potato yam, was the sole source of the diosgenin used in making contraceptive pills. According to herbalist Rosemary Gladstar in Herbal Healing for Women (Simon & Schuster, 1993), wild yam is "the most widely used herb in the world today." Over 200 million prescriptions that contain its derivatives are sold each year.
Although many physicians believe that there is no significant difference between synthetic and natural progesterone, others, such as California s John Lee, M.D. says that the reason synthetic progesterone causes side effects is because "it s not progesterone. The pharmaceutical companies alter the molecular structure so it no longer fits into the biochemical machinery of the body. The progesterone taken from the wild yam, on the other hand, is nearly identical to what the body produces." The body easily converts it into the identical molecule. That is not the case with the synthetic compound. Of equal importance, Lee says, supplementation with wild yam is safe. It imposes no increased risk of cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, or endometrial cancer, he says, and it has no side effects. Wild yam progesterone is available as a cream, oil, tablet or capsule through your physician or over the counter. Most studies report that the cream or oil is the most effective. This is because the progesterone is absorbed through the skin and directly enters the bloodstream, whereas tablets and capsules are broken down in the stomach before they can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Other Benefits of Natural Progesterone
There are reports from people (women and men) experiencing swollen and painful hands and joints who claim that after applying natural progesterone cream several times a day for five consecutive days and less frequently thereafter, have a noticeable reduction in swelling and joint pain, and increased hand flexibility.
The cream is reported to alleviate aches and pains from cuts, bruises, lacerations and skin irritations. It has been used to rapidly heal skin ulcers, and people report reduced muscle fatigue after rubbing the cream on affected areas. And, finally, there are many reports that say the cream is one of the best moisturizers.
Why am I writing about natural progesterone? Because after using natural progesterone body cream for four months I no longer suffer from hot flashes and night sweats. If you suffer from PMS and or Pre-and Post-Menopausal Conditions, I wish the same relief for you.
