Enrollment is rapidly building for the Bay Area's largest conference for professional women-the ninth annual Professional BusinessWomen of California Conference Wednesday, May 27 at Moscone Center in San Francisco. Last year's conference at the San Jose Convention Center attracted 4,500 women and this year's conference is expected to have over 8,000 women. The conference offers professional women practical tips and techniques for increasing their business; information that will help them move up in their corporations and insight into new ways to think and gain leadership, influence and power. This year's conference has more speakers and seminars on a wider variety of topics than ever before. In addition to three powerful keynote speakers, attendees can choose from 36 seminar topics, broken into three tracks of 12 high-value seminars throughout the day. Seminar topics range from leadership to technology to career and growth trends and financial and health issues. They are led by top women executives, entrepreneurs, expert coaches, mentors and leaders in business. Included in the more than 125 speakers are: Dawn Riley, CEO of America True, the first woman skipper of a co-ed America's Cup team; Sarah Weddington, the attorney who argued Roe v. Wade before the U.S. Supreme Court.; Tara VanDerveer, head women's varsity basketball coach at Stanford University; Audrey Rice Oliver, President Integrated Business Solutions and mayoral candidate in Oakland; Marcia Wieder, author, Making Your Dreams Come True; Kathi Burke, vice chairman, Bank of America; Sue Swenson, CEO, Cellular One; Ann Winblad, partner, Hummer Winblad Venture Partners; and many more.
A small sampling from the 36 seminar topics this year:
How to Finance a Business
Emotional IntelligenceÑthe Power of Humanizing the Workplace
Leadership in the 21st Century: Creating Opportunities from Challenges
Under 30 and on the Fast Track: Wildly Successful Entrepreneurs and Corporate Executives
Entrepreneur Success Stories
Negotiating Career Moves
Home Sweet Office
Marketing to Generation X and Y
The day opens with a continental breakfast and in inspiring session led by morning keynote
speaker Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Ms. Joyner-Kersee is one of the most honored athletes in the
world and earned the title World's Greatest Female Athlete by winning three Olympic gold
medals; one silver; two bronze; the world and Olympic record in the heptathalon and the
American records in the long jump and 50 and 60 meter hurdles.
The luncheon keynote speaker is Deborah Norville, Emmy award-winning journalist and host
of Inside Edition. Ms. Norville began her broadcast career at the age of 19, and six
months later conducted a live interview with the President of the United States. She has
worked at CBS News, ABC Radio and NBC News. She recently authored Back on Track: How to
Straighten out your Life When it Throws You a Curve.
Bringing the day to a rousing close is the final keynote speaker of the day, Anita Roddick, Founder and CEO of The Body Shop, which is the United Kingdom's largest international retailer with over 1,500 stores in 47 countries. The Body Shop campaigns internationally on behalf of the issues Anita believes in: human and civil rights, and animal and environmental protection.
Throughout the conference, attendees can browse the PBWC Resource Center, packed with exhibits offering products, service, and information to enhance women's professional and personal life. Exhibitors are local businesses, government agencies, internet service providers and non-profit organizations.
One of the greatest values of the conference is the high level networking with women from Northern California and throughout the state.
This year's conference has a new feature: special interest chat rooms facilitated interactive issues forums on a variety of topics that will be initiated during the conference and will continue discussion on the PBWC web site after the conference.
Another added value this year is that conference attendees automatically become members of Professional Business Women of California. Members receive a quarterly newsletter packed with career tips, profiles of top women executives, advice from leaders and more networking opportunities.
At last year's conference a high-school mentoring program was launched with such success the program will be expanded this year to host thousands of girls who will participate in their own program-within-a-program. They will interact with inspirational and educational speakers and role models who will encourage them to discover and pursue the profession of their dreams. The girls will join the women's conference during the morning keynote session and will participate in their own conference the remainder of the day.
On-site childcare services are available the day of the conference, subject to sufficient demand. Information on options and cost is available through Nannycare, (800-278-1070).
PBWC also will arrange round-trip bus service from Santa Clara and San Ramon to Moscone Center. The transportation fee is $25, with sign-up on the conference registration form.
Full conference registration is $150, which includes all conference sessions, refreshment breaks, lunch, a closing reception and a free one-year membership to PBWC. Registration deadline is May 1, 1998 to qualify for mail-back registration confirmation.
The conference opens for registration at 7 a.m., with the Opening Session and
Continental Breakfast scheduled for 8:45 a.m. The closing reception is from 5:45 to 6:30
p.m.
Attendees are encouraged to register early, as previous conferences have sold out.

Mid-Peninsula Bank has named Susan Black, the first women CEO to head a Silicon Valley based bank. On March 23, the Palo Alto based subsidiary of Greater Bay Bancorp announcedthat the former executive vice president had been appointed chief executive. Black is a past founding Board Member of Professional BusinessWomen of California. For Ms. Black (also named to the board of Mid-Peninsula Bank), being the first woman CEOamong the dozen independent banks based in the valley is no big deal. "Our organization is really gender blind," she said. "There are many women in senior management." Ms. Black will replace David Kalkbrenner, founding CEO of the $400 million asset Mid-Peninsula Bank. The Mid-Peninsula board approved the appointment March 19th. Mr.Kalkbrenner cited Ms. Black's strong marketing and managerial skills among the reasons for her promotion, "In the competitive nature of our business, we need a manager who can managerelationships and manage the process to generate new clients." Mr. Kalkbrenner said Ms. Black gender never entered the picture. "She was the most qualified, it wasn't a matter of gender," he said. "But I think it's great Susan has broken ground." Ms. Black already has had a major influence on the direction of Mid-Peninsula. She was a founding officer of the bank when it opened in 1987, and as executive vice president she hasbeen overseeing the bank's team of lending officers. Even before she joined Mid-Peninsula, Ms. Black had broken a glass ceiling or two. As a civilianemployee for the U.S. Department of Defense in the 1970's, she was the first woman to benamed to the DOD's Pacific Criminal Intelligence Unit based in South Korea. "I've always felt there were no (gender) limitations that weren't surmountable," Ms. Black said.

Tamara Davis:
The second annual mentoring program, "Reaching for the Future: Empowering Young
Women," is designed to keep young women motivated to enter the fields of math,
science and technology. This year's conference is sponsored by the Professional
BusinessWomen of California, Charles Schwab, Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, Microsoft
Corporation and the Garnett Foundation, and it will be held concurrently with the general
PBWC Conference on Wednesday, May 27, 1998 at the Moscone Convention Center in San
Francisco. With an expected attendance of over 1,000 young women, this "conference
within a conference" is unique in its mission and reach. Over 70 high schools in the
San Francisco, Mid-Peninsula and East Bay areas have been invited to participate.
It is a general trend that fewer numbers of women enter the fields of math, science and technology. Only 33% of girls are enrolled in computer courses or engaged in computer-related activities. They choose to enroll in greater proportions in arts, human studies and social sciences than they do in mathematics, science and technology, the world over. As our last year's keynote speaker, Joline Godfrey, said, "Technology is the new currency. Without it, even with better access to capital, women and girls will be left behind."
This conference is a day young women can dedicate to their personal and professional development. There are many sessions to choose from, lead by many successful role models. Each one is guaranteed to pass on what she has learned and accomplished to the next generation of working women. Many of these women didn't discover their direction or avocation until their 30's, 40's and later. But each is here to give our future generation of professional women the benefit of those experiences at an earlier age so they can develop their own economic power and priorities.
This is a unique partnership between the PBWC, our sponsors, and both public and
private schools. To maximize the impact and follow-up activities, all registration is
being done through the schools There will be booths located throughout the exhibit hall to
enroll women in mentoring and internship programs. Sign-up and make a difference in a
young woman's life! s
