the State of Texas, Ann Richards catapulted into the national consciousness with her
unforgettable speech at the 1988 Democratic National Convention. Known for her inimitable
wit and lucid insights, this former teacher and mother of four served as State Treasurer
and then as Governor of Texas. She created thousands of jobs; rewrote the penal code;
introduced educational policies that raised SAT scores and reduced the drop-out rate; and
brought state government directly into the communities. She pioneered major fiscal and
social reforms and worked tirelessly to appoint more minorities and women to state posts.
Ann Richards currently serves on many corporate boards, works with a major law firm and
lectures extensively.
